You are standing at the operational center of a vast system of derricks, wires and rail lines that reached out and connected all the areas of the quarry such as the red and green quarries, the steam engines and boilers, and the lathe house.
A derrick is a large apparatus for lifting and moving heavy objects, such as the granite blocks in Redstone Quarry. The derrick consists of a long beam pivoted at the base of a vertical, stationary mast and moved by ropes running on pulleys.
Remains of the derrick assembly. A base plate socket is on the left. Some sections of the mast remain, along with the assembly of steel and ten guy wire attachments, which sat on the top of the vertical mast. (Photo by Bob Cottrell)
