Join us this summer for a citizen science experiment to learn about the effects of plastic pollution on plants and animals!
Attend an orientation session on June 30th or July 1st to learn about erosion, pollution in our waterways, and the effects of microplastics on plants and animals. Participants will also learn how to collect their own samples from the Saco River for analysis. Sample collection kits will be available throughout the summer for check-out.
Join us again on July 22nd, August 5th, or August 26th to analyse the samples you’ve collected during the summer and create a community snapshot of plastic pollution in Conway. Participants will learn how to filter microscopic plastic particles out of the water samples they collected before examining them under a microscope. The results from this summer-long experiment will be used to hypothesize answers to two National Geographic geo-inquiry questions:
- What kind and quantity of plastic waste is present in our community?
- Where is plastic pollution coming from in our community and why?
