White Mountain Art: A Tour of the Notches

The White Mountains have attracted tourists and artists since the early 1800's. Take an arm-chair tour of the notches of the White Mountains through 19th century paintings, photographs, and postcards. This presentation will include the Legend of Chocorua and the true story behind the Willey Side. Take an hour to come explore the historic relationship between people and nature through the paintings, literature, and poetry in White Mountain tradition.

The presentation will be following the footsteps of artists over the past two centuries such as Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt and Benjamin Champney. This program will look at the history and nature behind the art, the geological formations that attracted the artists, waterfalls, and flora and fauna. This program will talk about the tools and techniques the artists used in their paintings, drawings and prints, going into the history the artists captured in their work such as farm and village life.
